Congratulations to two classrooms at Lindbergh Elementary for winning a PBIS drawing for a field trip to the Apple Store. Patty Hupkowicz's first grade class and Cindy Morath's fourth grade class both had the opportunity to partake in hands-on learning .

The first grade students had a digital story read to them on a large screen and then were handed iPad Pros and Apple Pencils to recreate a scene from the text. Working on shared iPads, students learned skills such as collaborative communication, digital layering, and blending colors. After 45 minutes, the pairs were asked to share their drawings on the screen to the class. They even had an audience of Apple Store shoppers!

Fourth grade students had the opportunity to experience coding with Swift Playgrounds. Coding supports problem solving skills, math skills, reading skills, and teaches students the power of perseverance. The presenter walked the students through the app and student pairs created codes to make a character (named Byte) perform certain tasks. At the end of the session, students shared their codes, including how they debugged their codes when there was an error.

Both trips were highly engaging, informative, and exciting for the students. Apple offers free trips for classrooms and they also offer teacher workshops and sessions throughout the year. Click this link to see more field trip photos!
